Your Loyalty Program Is An Untapped Growth Channel

When investing in your marketing strategies for 2026, why not consider giving some special attention to a channel you may not have considered, but where your customers are already engaged and waiting to hear from you?

Ecommerce marketers are channel loyalists by design. Email, SMS, paid social, organic content, search—it doesn’t really matter what the channel is, as long as it supports the strategy and meets KPIs. They all have their strengths and work best together. There is one marketing channel that often flies under the radar (as a marketing channel, that is) and that’s your loyalty program.

A thoughtfully-designed loyalty program does so much more than keep customers around: it gives your brand a highly structured, self-updating visibility into your audience, and a dedicated channel to market to them in a more personalized way.

Loyalty Tiers As Segments

While most brands are thinking of loyalty tiers as, “spend x, get y,” set your brand apart by viewing tiers as self-curating customer segments.

Each tier reflects different buying behaviors, commitment, and lifetime value. In this way, each tier has its own personality and motivations. Are your buyers interested in and committed to moving up, and how can you incentivize and reward them for their actions to do so?

When you stop thinking about loyalty members in tiers and start thinking about them in segments, you start to recognize the power you wield to create highly personalized and effective campaigns for them. The difference between a first-time buyer who earned 100 points and a two-year VIP who buys monthly is vast, and your marketing to these two different customers should reflect that..

Loyalty Messages As Proactive Re-Engagement Touchpoints

Many loyalty programs are reactive by nature, engaging rewards members when they earn points, redeem a reward, hit a milestone, or have points about to expire. These are all good practices, but you can take your loyalty program by the next level by being proactive in your communications as well.

Consider targeted messages to your loyalty segments like this:

  • “You’re only 50 points away from your next reward, here’s something to help you get there.”
  • “Members in your tier usually love this new drop: take an early look.”
  • “We added a new perk to your tier, unlock it before anyone else.”

Rather than seeing loyalty as a defense against a lapsing customer, start treating it as a way of activating and engaging customers before they get to that point. Eventually, these touchpoints will become baked into your brand and form a strong relationship between you and your customers. (More like a dialogue than a search-and-rescue mission!)

Loyalty With SMS and Email

It’s certainly no secret that email and SMS are still two of the strongest revenue channels in ecommerce. It’s maybe a slightly lesser-known fact that they can be even more powerful when they’re connected to loyalty tools.

With SMS and email, loyalty not only builds the segments and creates the touchpoints, but also helps them become more relevant, more personalized, and more welcomed

Even the most loyal customer will get burnt out if you only reach out to let them know if there’s a sale. Based on behaviors, loyalty triggers, and tiers, you can send messages like:

  • Tier-specific campaigns
  • Points balance nudges
  • “VIP Early Access” announcements
  • Reward reminders

Think about it this way: Loyalty gives context. Email/SMS provide the reach. Together, they create a retention loop that continues to grow over time.

Loyalty As A Fun Channel

When you’re reaching out to your customers at scale, it helps to keep in mind why they started shopping from your brand in the first place. Loyalty-specific campaigns are the perfect place to flex your brand-building skills, reminding customers that they’re not just “buying something;” they’re investing in a brand that gives them something they like, one that stands out among the rest.

  • Infuse brand-friendly language into email and SMS campaigns—is your brand the sage leader, sharing advice and offering instruction? Or is it fun, inspiring, and casual? Let your retention marketing be an extension of the brand, not something that exists at odds with it.
  • Add a mix of lifestyle images and product images so keep it fresh. Static images of products lack personality so in your marketing campaigns, show your products out in the wild, being used in aspirational or relatable ways.
  • Quality over quantity, always. Speak to your customers often, but always make it worth it. Before you push an email or SMS message, reflect: “is this the kind of message I’d delete without opening, or would it brighten my day just a little bit?”

Marketing is a tough business, but for most brands in ecommerce, if you’re having fun with it, your shoppers will as well.
